Al Houdh Roundabout Approved By RTA

Al Houdh Roundabout Approved By RTA. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has recently approved a significant upgrade to the Al Houdh roundabout, a key junction on the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road. This project involves transforming the current signalised roundabout into a free-flowing, multi-tier crossing, with an estimated cost of AED 227 million.

A Strategic Investment For Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road

This new development is part of a broader initiative aimed at widening and improving the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road, which stretches from the outskirts of Dubai and Sharjah to the Al Houdh roundabout. The total investment for this comprehensive upgrade now amounts to AED 2.52 billion, reflecting the strategic importance of this corridor.

Directive From Dubai Leadership

The endorsement of this contract follows a directive from Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. He emphasized the urgency of completing the Al Houdh roundabout upgrade to enhance traffic flow and increase the junction’s capacity. The project includes constructing flyovers across the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road, ensuring seamless traffic movement to and from Al Yalayis road in all directions.

Key Features Of The Al Houdh Roundabout Project

The project encompasses several critical components:

  • Widening of Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road: The road will be expanded in an 11-kilometer-long sector, stretching from Al Houdh roundabout to the intersection leading to Al Maktoum Airport. This expansion will increase the road from three lanes to six lanes in each direction.
  • Service Roads: A 4-kilometer-long service road will be constructed on both sides of the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road, from the intersection with Al Khail road to Al Houdh roundabout. This will facilitate easier entry and exit from the developmental projects in the surrounding area.
  • Additional Infrastructure: The project also includes the installation of street lighting, storm water drainage systems, traffic signals, and road markings. Utility works will be undertaken as required by service providers in the area, ensuring comprehensive support for the new infrastructure.

Timeline And Phases

The Al Houdh roundabout project is part of the broader Phase II of the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road improvement initiative. The construction is expected to take over 24 months, reflecting the scale and complexity of the work involved.

Previously, the RTA completed a flyover across Al Houdh roundabout, serving traffic from Jebel Ali Port towards Dubai. This flyover comprises three lanes, extending approximately 1 kilometer and linking Al Yalayis road to the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road towards Dubai. Additionally, the widening of the road from three to six lanes between Al Houdh roundabout and the Arabian Ranches interchange, spanning 10 kilometers, was also accomplished.

Future Developments

As part of the ongoing Phase II, the RTA has successfully completed the construction of another flyover linking Hessa road, Al Khail road, and Al Barsha area with the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road. This project, costing around AED 940 million, further enhances connectivity and supports Dubai’s vision of a smooth, efficient transportation network.

Conclusion

The transformation of Al Houdh roundabout is a vital component of Dubai’s ambitious infrastructure development plans. This project will not only improve traffic flow but also support the city’s growth by providing better access to key areas. With the RTA’s commitment to completing this project efficiently, Dubai residents and visitors can look forward to a significantly enhanced travel experience along the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road.
