From Hessa Street to Sheikh Zayed Road, recent infrastructure projects—especially the construction of new bridges—are already transforming the city traffic flow, resulting in faster travel times and less congestion.

Below are five notable developments that are helping to improve the flow of traffic and ease daily commuting for drivers across Dubai.

1. New 1km Bridge Connecting Hessa Street to Al Khail Road

On December 22, the RTA opened a new 1-kilometer bridge linking Hessa Street with Al Khail Road. This bridge is a part of the broader Hessa Street development project and aims to reduce travel time significantly. Before the bridge, it would take around 15 minutes to travel between these two major roads, but with the new bridge in place, that time has been reduced to just three minutes.

The development of Hessa Street includes upgrades to several major intersections, and it’s anticipated that the project will be fully completed by Q4 2025. With 54% of the project already finished, these improvements are set to make commuting more efficient for thousands of drivers.

2. Three-Lane Bridge Connecting Sheikh Rashid Road to Infinity Bridge

In a move to further ease congestion, the RTA has also opened a new three-lane bridge linking Sheikh Rashid Road to Infinity Bridge. Announced on December 8, this bridge is part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which aims to reduce traffic congestion along a busy stretch from Bur Dubai to Mamzar.

The project involves the construction of three new bridges and several road upgrades. By improving connectivity and traffic flow between Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Road, and Al Khaleej Street, the bridge is expected to significantly ease congestion in these areas, benefiting both residents and commuters.

3. New Bridges at Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection

As part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project, the RTA has introduced two new two-lane bridges:

  • The first bridge facilitates traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, improving access to Al Qusais and Deira.
  • The second bridge handles traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port.

These bridges have had a significant impact on reducing travel time. For example, the time it takes to travel from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road has been reduced by 40%, cutting peak-hour travel time from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes.

For drivers heading from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street, travel time has been reduced by an impressive 70%, from 21 minutes down to just 7 minutes.

4. Major Bridge Developments on Al Khail Road: Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1

Two major new bridges were introduced on Al Khail Road in September as part of the larger Al Khail Road Development Project. These bridges connect key areas and are designed to ease congestion:

  • Zaa’beel Bridge: Links Zaa’beel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road, heading towards Jebel Ali.
  • Al Quoz 1 Bridge: Connects Al Meydan Street to Al Khail Road, also heading towards Jebel Ali.

These improvements are expected to reduce travel times by up to 30% across several key locations along Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The bridges have a combined capacity of handling 8,000 vehicles per hour, making daily commutes much smoother and quicker.

5. Major Overhaul of the Trade Centre Roundabout

The Trade Centre Roundabout, one of Dubai’s oldest traffic landmarks, is undergoing a significant transformation to improve traffic flow and ease congestion around the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). As part of the Trade Centre Roundabout Redevelopment Project, the RTA is converting the roundabout into a surface intersection and adding five new bridges to facilitate smoother traffic movement.

The upgrades will improve access and traffic flow from Sheikh Zayed Road to key streets, including Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, 2nd December Street, Zabeel Palace Street, and Al Mustaqbal Street. The new bridges will help reduce traffic congestion significantly, cutting down travel times such as:

  • Reducing the travel delay from 12 minutes to just 90 seconds.
  • Cutting the travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street from 6 minutes to 1 minute.

This major project is designed to enhance the movement of visitors to and from the DWTC and surrounding business districts.
