Dubai to Close Sheikh Zayed Road on New Year Eve: Timings Announced

Dubai to Close Sheikh Zayed Road on New Year Eve: Timings Announced. Dubai authorities have unveiled new traffic regulations to ensure smoother road conditions and enhanced safety during peak hours. These measures include the closure of Sheikh Zayed Road and restrictions on truck movements across critical routes, particularly during New Year’s Eve celebrations and beyond.

New Year Eve Traffic Restrictions

On December 31, 2023, major roads in Dubai, including Sheikh Zayed Road, will witness temporary closures to manage the high influx of vehicles and facilitate public celebrations such as the Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Festival fireworks display. Timings for these closures will be announced in coordination with Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Truck Movement Ban on Emirates Road

Effective January 1, 2025, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will implement extended restrictions on truck movement along Emirates Road. These restrictions will apply during evening peak hours, specifically from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, targeting the busy stretch between Al Awir Street and Sharjah.

This new measure aligns with the RTA’s broader strategy to optimize traffic flow, enhance road safety standards, and reduce congestion on the emirate’s major roads.

Key Details of the Restrictions

Major Roads Affected:
Trucks will be banned on several arterial roads, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Ittihad Street, and Meydan Street. Residential areas such as Al Mizhar, Al Muhaisnah, and Oud Al Muteena will also fall under a 16-hour truck movement ban from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Medium-Congestion Urban Areas:
Streets such as Airport Road, Oman Street, and Damascus Street will see restrictions during the following peak times:

Morning: 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM
Afternoon: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Evening: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Ensuring Safety and Efficiency

Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, highlighted the safety benefits of the initiative. “The decision to restrict truck movements on Emirates Road during peak evening hours stems from a thorough study of technical and engineering standards.

The aim is to minimize accidents caused by vehicle overlaps and alleviate congestion on vital routes,” he said.

He also emphasized the collaboration between Dubai Police and the RTA to educate truck drivers and transport companies about these changes. In 2024 alone, 792 violations were recorded for non-compliance with existing truck movement restrictions.

The updated measures aim to create a safer and more efficient traffic environment without disrupting economic logistics.

Proactive Traffic Management

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, reiterated the importance of these measures in redistributing truck traffic to alternative routes. To support compliance, the RTA will install clear informational and directional signage at the entry and exit points of restricted zones.

Additionally, public awareness campaigns, including advertisements, multilingual radio messages, and updates on social media platforms, will ensure all road users are informed about the changes.

Why These Measures Matter

Dubai traffic regulations reflect the city’s commitment to maintaining a world-class infrastructure. By strategically managing road usage, particularly during high-traffic periods like New Year’s Eve, the emirate ensures seamless mobility for residents, visitors, and commuters.

The initiative also underscores Dubai’s dedication to road safety and its proactive approach to meeting the needs of a growing urban population.

Conclusion

Dubai proactive traffic measures enhance road safety, ease congestion, and ensure efficient mobility during peak times. These initiatives reflect the city commitment to fostering a safer, more organized urban environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
