Dubai's RTA Expands Bus on Demand Service to Business Bay

Dubai’s RTA Expands Bus on Demand Service to Business Bay. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) continues its stride toward enhancing public transportation infrastructure with the approval of a significant plan to construct dedicated lanes for buses and taxis on six major streets. Spanning a total of 13.1 kilometres, this initiative is poised to streamline traffic flow and bolster the efficiency of public transport networks across the city.

Strengthening Dubai Transportation Network

The project encompasses several key thoroughfares integral to Dubai’s urban landscape, including Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, 2nd of December, Al Satwa, Al Nahda, Omar bin Al Khattab, and Naif Streets.

This strategic move aligns with Dubai’s broader vision to expand its network of dedicated bus lanes, ultimately aiming to cover a total length of 20.1 kilometers by 2027.

Embracing Global Transport Trends

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at RTA, the introduction of dedicated bus and taxi lanes mirrors successful transportation strategies observed worldwide.

By prioritizing public transport accessibility and efficiency, Dubai aims to incentivize residents to opt for public transit over private vehicles. Al Tayer highlights that this initiative is not only geared towards reducing travel times but also towards enhancing overall transportation experience, cutting operational costs, and mitigating emissions.

Projected Benefits and Impact

The expansion of dedicated bus lanes is anticipated to yield substantial reductions in travel times during peak hours, with rates ranging from 24 percent to 59 percent across different streets.

Notably, journey times on Naif Street, Al Satwa Road, Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, and Al Nahda Street are expected to witness significant decreases, translating into more efficient commuting experiences for residents and commuters alike.

Improving Bus Arrival Times

In addition to reducing travel times, the project aims to optimize bus arrival schedules, with anticipated improvements ranging from 28 percent to 56 percent on dedicated routes. Enhanced bus arrival times on key streets such as the 2nd of December Street, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, and Al Satwa Road are poised to further incentivize public transport usage, fostering a more sustainable and commuter-friendly urban environment.

Building on Previous Successes

The RTA’s commitment to enhancing public transportation is underscored by the success of previous phases of the dedicated bus lanes project. Notably, the implementation of dedicated lanes on select routes has already led to a notable reduction in trip times, with an average improvement of around 24 percent.

These positive outcomes have garnered higher satisfaction ratings among both bus and taxi riders and drivers, underscoring the tangible benefits of strategic transportation investments.

As Dubai continues to evolve as a global hub for commerce, culture, and innovation, investments in transportation infrastructure play a pivotal role in shaping the city sustainable growth trajectory.

The expansion of dedicated bus lanes exemplifies Dubai’s commitment to fostering a seamless and efficient urban transportation network, catering to the diverse needs of its residents and visitors while prioritizing environmental sustainability and enhanced mobility.
